EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT

Head Start provides developmentally appropriate curriculum to children ages 3-5 that fosters their social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development. Each of our centers has one collective goal, to provide children with the ultimate quality preschool experience by promoting independence and kindergarten readiness skills.

Children receive on-going assessments each program year to determine their developmental level and individual needs. Assessments aid staff in planning individualized lessons and activities to meet and enhance each child's skill level. Parent conferences are scheduled to discuss the child's progress and encourage them to participate in all aspects of their child's education and experience. Head Start believes that the parent is the child's first and most important teacher.

HEALTH

Health services are aimed toward preventive care for the child and family. A comprehensive health screening program, which includes early intervention with vision and hearing screenings, is provided. Hemoglobin and blood pressure are evaluated during the physical on the form. Each child receives a physical and dental examination prior to entry into the program. Identified health concerns receive follow-up care.

NUTRITION

Each Head Start child receives nutritious meals that are served family style. A variety of foods are served to broaden the child's food experiences. Nutritional assessments are completed by evaluating heights and weights, iron and lead levels in the blood, special diets and nutrition history. Parent education includes opportunities to assist individual families with food preparation, budgeting and nutritional skills.

DISABILITIES

Children with disabilities are served in a mainstream setting receiving all Head Start services. Some special services such as: speech therapy, physical or occupational therapy, vision and hearing are provided according to individual needs of the child. Referrals are made to existing community resources including school districts to collaborate service delivery and facilitate transitioning as needed.

MENTAL HEALTH

Head Start provides positive effects on children's socioemotional development including self-esteem, achievement motivation and social behavior. Children benefit from an environment, which accepts them as individuals and appreciates their capabilities and fosters their growth. A consultant observes behaviors in the classrooms and provide services for children, families and staff.

SOCIAL SERVICES

Positive changes for the family's personal lives, behaviors and attitudes are increased through referral and follow-up services to resources of various community agencies. Through professional staff guidance, Head Start promotes self-sufficiency for the family. Training is available to enhance; strengths and achieve goals.

PARENT INVOLVEMENT

Head Start realizes the importance of the family and attempts to involve them in every aspect of the program. All Head Start parents are part of a Parent Committee, which assists staff in meeting the local needs of the children.
