  POSITION:              Bus Operator

 

CLASSIFICATION:             Regular Full-Time Program Year Employee, Bargaining Unit

 

       SUPERVISOR:             Site Administrator

 

POSITION SUMMARY

 

Transports Head Start children and other passengers safely and in accordance with Head Start regulations and state and federal laws and assists with the maintenance and upkeep of LGUHS vehicles as assigned.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.                  Operates bus safely and in accordance with all applicable laws, rules or regulations.

2.                  Determines bus routes and time schedules as assigned, in conjunction with the Fiscal Officer and/or Supervisor as needed.

3.                  Maintains accurate notes on each planned route, including specific driving directions and pick-up/drop-off locations for each child on the route.

4.                  Maintains clean and safe bus, including reporting any potential safety or operational issues to supervisor and completing appropriate maintenance request paperwork.

5.                  Completes pre-trip inspection of assigned vehicle at the start of each day, including ensuring that assigned vehicle has sufficient fuel at all times.

6.                  Completes post-trip inspection of the assigned vehicle following each route.

7.                  Completes head count when loading and unloading the bus.

8.                  Completes pre-trip form, vehicle log, fuel log and documents emergency evacuation drills.

9.                  Implements emergency evacuation procedures for scheduled drills or in case of emergency.

10.             Submits accurate and complete time sheets to supervisor bi-weekly or as requested.

11.             Promotes Lake-Geauga United Head Start, Inc. in the community and recruits children for the program as appropriate.

12.             Encourages in-kind donations through regular communication or reminders to parents and communication with the community.

13.             Attends trainings and meetings as required by program calendar, supervisor or Fiscal Officer or professional development plan or as required by state or federal law.

14.             Other duties as assigned.

15.             Mandatory participation in annual self-assessment if selected.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

 

1.                  Employee must know and adhere to:

·        State of Ohio driving laws

·        Ohio Pupil Transportation Operation and Safety Rules

·        LGUHS transportation policies and procedures

·        ODJFS licensing rules

·        Head Start Performance Standards

2.                  Employee must be skilled in:

·        Working all facets of the bus, including emergency exits

·        Handling emergency situations, on or off the bus

·        Operating handicapped accessible vehicle functions, i.e. wheelchair lift

·        Utilizing a fire extinguisher

·        Recognizing and reporting potential child abuse

·        Recognizing and avoiding, when possible, road hazards

3.                  Employee must be able to:

·        Lift at least 50 pounds regularly

·        Sit for long periods of time

·        Reach above his head with both arms

·        See and hear without significant impairment

·        Bend without trouble

·        Walk without trouble

·        Climb steps easily

·        Work with others

·        Read and write

·        Use basic equipment such as cell phone, photocopier, telephone

·        Pass employment physical specifically for bus operators including TB test every two years

·        Pass T-8 (driver’s) physical annually

·        Pass initial and regular drug and alcohol screens           

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

 

Tasks may involve unplanned or procedure specific exposure to bodily fluids and possible exposure to communicable diseases.  Risk involved with travel on main highways and rural roads and evening travel.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

 

1.      High School Diploma or GED

2.      Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with school bus and passenger endorsements and no outstanding violations with the Department of Motor Vehicles

3.      Veteran driver’s training as required by law

4.      Experience driving a bus

5.      Completed first aid, communicable disease and CPR courses or ability to complete courses

6.      Successful completion of road test

7.      Eligible to work in the U.S.

8.      Clean criminal background supported by background check (fingerprints) and subsequent background checks as required by law

9.      Any other requirements that are created, revised or otherwise determined by the State of Ohio
